CRAFTS, FASHION, DRAG & MORE

Sewing makes me feel connected to hundreds of generations of women before me, stitching clothing for their families, art-making with personality and style sewn into each stitch.

The UCU fashion show (2023 & 2024)

My second fashion show at UCU, I made two designs, one for Lucian and one for Michelle. Lucian’s design was based on the art of Hilma af Klint and waves. The symbols of the Sun, eye, Moon, and clock came to symbolize the cycle of spring, summer, autumn, and winter for me. This was around the time that I started learning about women’s hormone cycles. I wanted all the parts of the design to flow together, creating a symbolic/anatomic map of the body and its microcosms.

Michelle’s outfit was inspired by Boygenius’ song Not Strong Enough, the line “Always an angel, never a God.” I originally made the design for my friend Thalia. Both of us were very anxious about what others thought of us, and tried to be as “good” as possible. This design symbolized burning the angel wings; to become a God, a Creator with autonomy & freedom, you must destroy the angel within you.

DRAG KING: Hugh Strapon

I've always had a strange relationship with gender. I grew up idealizing tomboys and distancing myself from femininity, but after coming out as nonbinary in 2021 I found myself feeling even more limited by the urge to prove I was "masculine enough" to use they/them pronouns. I missed skirts and makeup as a form of expression, and I gained a new appreciation of "feminine" traits like compassion, empathy, and care. I decided to just be Emma, and have felt free in my expression ever since.

I now love drag as a way to express these masculine or non-gendered sides of myself. Performing as Handsome Squidward or a good old-fashioned loverboy at ACU brought me so much euphoria and belonging. And I'm so excited to bring Hugh Strapon back to life at queer bar Lellebel the coming months.
